The medical staff and administration of Greenwood Leflore Hospital extend condolences to the family of Dr. George V. Smith who passed away on Saturday, December 18, 2021.

Dr. Smith was a native of Jackson, Mississippi who was operating a private practice in Grenada when Greenwood Leflore Hospital recruited him in 2002 to join our surgical team.  He later joined the hospital’s Greenwood Gastroenterology Center where he practiced until 2018.

Dr. Smith received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts in 1957.  He completed a general surgery residency at Hartford Hospital in Hartford, Connecticut in 1964 and a transplantation fellowship at the University of Colorado in Denver.  He was certified by the American Board of Surgery and a member of the society of American Gastro Endoscopic Surgeons.  He was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.  Among his many contributions to medicine, Dr. Smith taught advanced trauma life support to special forces in the Army National Guard and researched the use of hypothermia to treat cancer.  He also signed a bill with former Mississippi Gov. Bill Waller to have organ donor designations placed on driver’s licenses.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, February 5, 2022 at 4:00 p.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Nativity, located at 400 Howard Street in Greenwood.

Dr. Smith will be deeply missed by his colleagues, his co-workers and his patients.
