Hospital to offer insurance info

By BRYN STOLE Staff Writer

Health insurance navigators, counselors and brokers will be on hand this weekend at Greenwood Leflore Hospital to help answer questions about coverage under the Affordable Care Act.

Open enrollment on the health insurance exchanges will run through Feb. 15.

Counselors and navigators from the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson as well as from GLHwill be on hand Friday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the hospital’s conference rooms to answer questions about insurance coverage and eligibility for federal insurance subsidies.

A second insurance provider will also be offering policies to Leflore County residents this year. UnitedHealthcare is now offering plans on the health insurance exchanges in addition to plans offered by Humana Healthcare, which was the sole provider in the county last year.

Lora Evans, managed care director at GLH, said that anyone who signed up for coverage on the exchanges last year needs to renew or re-enroll to maintain coverage.

Tineciaa Harris, who directs the health insurance navigator project for UMMC, said that residents earning up to four times the federal poverty line could be eligible for subsidies to help offset the cost of insurance.

Eligibility varies based on income and family size, Harris said. Navigators and counselors will be able to walk residents through any questions about income, eligibility and subsidies this weekend, Harris said.

Even those who earn too much or too little to qualify for federal subsidies are welcome to use the exchanges as a tool when shopping for health insurance, Harris said.
