Greenwood Leflore Hospital surgeon, Dr. Lucas, co-authors article for international publication

Greenwood, Mississippi – John F. Lucas III, MD of Lucas Surgical Group, a member of the Greenwood Leflore Hospital Network, has co-authored an article in the Journal of Vascular Access.

Dr. Lucas co-authored the article, titled “A mechanism of banding failure in excessively dilated fistulas”, with Drs. Alexandros Mallios of Institut Mulualiste Montsouris in Paris, France and William Jennings, a retired surgeon with the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine in Tulsa.

During a mission trip to Jamaica, the three doctors noticed during discussion an unusual problem that they had all encountered, arteriovenous fistulas growing excessively dilated.

“When patients go on dialysis, an artery and vein are connected so that blood flows faster,” says Dr. Lucas, general and vascular surgeon. “Over time, the vein grows larger, so patients can go on the kidney machine. However, it can grow way too large, and this article describes how to fix that.”

Dr. Mallios presented the article at an international vascular access symposium in Europe in 2016. Following his presentation, the Journal of Vascular Access published the article into international circulation.
