Hospital board to begin open meetings

Greenwood Leflore Hospital will move to an open format for the monthly meetings of its board of directors in compliance with a change in state open meeting laws that will become effective in 2016.

Meetings will be held on the third Tuesday of every month at 6 p.m. in the hospital’s large conference room.

The hospital’s board is made up of two city appointees — Chairman Brian Waldrop and Secretary-Treasurer Sammy Foster — and three county appointees: Vice-Chairman Gladys Flaggs, Bryan Thornhill and Larry Griggs.

“There is no opposition to open meetings over private meetings,” said Jim Jackson, the hospital’s chief executive officer in an email. “The Board has always conducted its business, its oversight of this hospital and its fiduciary responsibility to the highest integrity under the prescribed regulations in effect, even with the ‘Sunshine’ provision offered hospitals in state statute prior to the new Open Meetings regulations.”

“Based on the historical conduct and performance of the Board, there will be no expected change or impact on the meetings or in the relationship the Board has developed with hospital administration, the medical staff or with the community,” said Jackson.
