March of Dimes walk to be held

The March of Dimes Walk for Babies will be held Saturday at Greenwood Leflore Hospital’s walking track, which is located outside the Wellness Center.

The event will start at 9 a.m. and will feature face painting, inflatables, hamburgers, hotdogs and a candy bar.

Carly Brooks, Brittany Whiteside, Grace Whitfield, Carly Freeland, Emily Gnemi, Matthew Gregory, Leslie Green, Claire Webb Green and Kristen Brock have all put teams together for the event.

“My child was born at 32 weeks. So, we went through the whole preemie experience,” said Freeland. “I always wanted to a part of the March of Dimes walk.”

Each team raises money throughout the year before the event. The proceeds go to supporting local programs that help mothers have healthy, full-term pregnancies and funds research for babies born prematurely.

This year, Freeland raised $500 by selling T-shirts that she created for the walk. Her team will be wearing the shirts Saturday.

“When my doctor found out I would not be able to have a full-term pregnancy, he gave me a steroid shot to help my daughter’s lungs develop,” said Freeland. “The March of Dimes helped fund and develop that shot, and my daughter didn’t have any breathing problems after she was born.”

The public is invited to participate in the walk and festivities or make a donation to the March of Dimes.

“The March of Dimes is saving our children that are born early,” said Freeland. “All donations are very much needed and wanted.”
