The medical staff and administration of Greenwood Leflore Hospital extend condolences to the family of Dr. Raymond P. Girnys who passed away on Thursday, September 19, 2024.

Dr. Girnys was a native of Brooklyn, New York, who before coming to Greenwood, had a private practice in general and trauma surgery in Brooklyn and served as chief of staff at Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn. He was board-certified as a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Girnys graduated from Fordham University in Bronx, New York in 1978, and received his Doctor of Medicine degree from St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies in 1982.

Dr. Girnys joined the Medical Staff at Greenwood Leflore Hospital on October 24, 2005 and served as a general surgeon and wound care specialist. He served the hospital in various leadership roles over the years. Dr. Girnys was the hospital’s current chief of staff, a position he held two other times throughout his 19 years of service at the hospital. He served on several other hospital committees, and served as chair of many of those committees, including the Wound Care Committee, Infection Control Committee, Constitution and Bylaws Committee, Credentials Committee, Continuing Education Committee, and the Quality Council.

Dr. Girnys will be deeply missed by his colleagues, co-workers and his patients.
